North Sunderland Seahouses, as it used to be called was an extension of the now adjoining village of North Sunderland. Seahouses was developed as a haven for fishing and lime burning activities.

There has been a harbour since 1318, if not earlier. Possibly little more than a sheltered creek originally, it has always been known as 'North Sunderland Harbour'.

The village was formed around the harbour built around the period 1786 and later improved in the late 19th century in order to improve the local fishing industry. There are still fishing boats working out of the harbour, although with the scale of the fishing industry much reduced, many are now utilised as transport for tourists visiting the Farne Islands
